WHO PARTICIPATES IN SQUARE DANCING?
You can literally square dance around the world. Modern square dancers are found throughout Canada, the U.S. and in more than 50 countries abroad. There are 50 clubs in Eastern Ontario alone.
BUT I DON'T DANCE!
No experience or specific skills necessary! If you can walk to music, you can square dance. Many of today's experienced people have never danced previously. It is a non-competitive social activity.
WHY SQUARE DANCE?
Modern square dancing is for the average person who is interested in fun, new friends and exercise. It is a smoke-free, non-alcoholic healthy hobby.
IS FANCY DRESS NECESSARY?
Comfort comes first. For a start, you should wear soft-soled shoes. For men, a long sleeved shirt is customary.
IS SQUARE DANCING EXPENSIVE?
Definitely not! Square dancing is very economical. Most square dancers spend about $7.00 per person for an evening of instruction and relaxation.
Round Dancing
Round dancing is best described as choreographed ballroom dancing for couples. It is a social, non-competitive activity, for fun rather than competition. On the dance floor, choreography is directed verbally by a round dance cuer, enabling all couples on the floor to dance the same steps at the same time. This "cuer" guides the dancers through the figures in each routine, thereby eliminating the need to memorize, and making it challenging for the mind as well as the body
